Richard parker vs. pi
In the novel, we watch Pi develop a relationship with Richard Parker, but little does Pi know that Richard Parker is himself, and in reality Pi is only in a battle between himself. Throughout the book, Pi struggles in a search for his basic human needs and maintaining his positive attitude. In Pi's second story of him stranded on the lifeboat, the Bengal Tiger and himself end up being the same person. "It was Richard Parker who calmed me down... who brought me peace, purpose, I dare even say wholeness." (pg.179) When Pi says this, it is because he is determining that Richard Parker was his rock, and his motivation to keep going. Because of this, it is proven that Pi is Richard Parker, because Pi has always been a positive, religious, boy who believed in himself and in God. When Pi had landed in Mexico, Richard Parker walked away without looking back. "He didn't look at me... Then Richard Parker, companion of my torment, awful, fierce thing that kept me alive, moved forward and disappeared forever from my life." (pg. 315-316) This quote explains, that since Richard Parker did not turn back, it is because he is no longer in use for Pi. Pi has survived, and made his way back to land, which was the ultimate goal of his 227 day journey. Pi during his stay on the lifeboat, created a bond with Richard Parker, but in reality he was only creating a bond with himself. Protecting himself, securing himself and having someone with him. Richard Parker acted as motivation for Pi to live, although he was just an aspect of Pi's imagination.
